I had to write this essay after too many conversations where people spoke about ChatGPT as if it were alive as if it were a sentient, thinking being. The confusion isn’t harmless. It’s spreading fast.
With loads of comments on the latest ChatGPT model release, your overview adds some grounded knowledge and context. There is certainly a 'wow' factor but there are loads of limitations relative to 'humans'. Capabilities are one aspect, however the physical (energy & cooling) implications as well as mineral (chip) inputs help to frame the bigger picture in the future of LLM in pursuit of AGI and humans.

I think we sometimes treat these models as if they exist in a clean space, when in reality they are built on huge physical costs and the human labour behind the supply chains.
I believe this is where the conversation about “progress” really needs to happen.
