That feeling of accomplishment isn’t just a nice-to-have it’s the fuel that drives innovation, mastery, and meaning in our work. Yet today, we’re told that AI will render much of that struggle obsolete.
“Why learn when the machine can do it for you?” they ask. “Why go to university when a prompt can generate your thesis?”
This isn’t just wrong it’s dangerous. It reduces us from active creators to passive consumers, from architects of our own lives to mere spectators of someone else’s intelligence. And as someone who’s spent years advising startups, building teams, and wrestling with the ethics of technology, I can’t stay silent about the moral and practical cost of this shift.
AI isn’t the problem. The problem is how we’re choosing to design and use it. We’ve optimized for speed, efficiency, and scale but at the expense of human agency, learning, and the narratives that make us feel alive “I did that.”
The Illusion of Effortless Mastery
The “University Is Obsolete” Fallacy
The argument goes like this if AI can write code, generate business plans, or even diagnose diseases, why spend years learning these skills? Why not just outsource the work and focus on “higher-level” thinking?
This logic is seductive but flawed. It confuses execution with understanding. Sure, AI can generate a Python script or a marketing strategy, but it can’t tell you why one approach is better than another in your specific context. It can’t help you develop the taste, judgment, or ethical framework to make hard decisions. Most importantly, it robs you of the struggle that forges mastery.
Learning isn’t just about acquiring information it’s about developing the mental models, resilience, and creativity that come from grappling with problems. When we skip that process, we don’t just lose skills we lose ourselves.
We become dependent, fragile, and incapable of navigating ambiguity.
That’s not progress it’s a recipe for societal infantilization.
The Consumerization of Everything
Tech has always walked a fine line between empowerment and exploitation. Social media turned us into products the gig economy turned us into replaceable cogs. Now, AI risks turning us into mere consumers of intelligence people who consume answers rather than create them.
This isn’t just a philosophical concern. It’s a practical one. If we design tools that do everything for us, we’ll raise a generation of professionals who can’t think critically, innovate, or adapt. We’ll create a world where no one knows how anything works because why bother learning when the machine can do it faster?
That’s not the future I want. I want a future where AI amplifies human potential, not replaces it. Where it handles the tedious, repetitive work so we can focus on the meaningful, creative, and challenging. But getting there requires intentional design something today’s tools sorely lack.
The Scaffolding Gap
What’s Missing in Today’s AI Tools
Most AI tools today share a common flaw they’re optimized for output, not outcomes. They prioritize speed, coverage, and automation but ignore the human needs for agency, learning, and accomplishment.
Here’s what’s structurally missing.
1. The “Human Job Design” Layer
AI tools are great at deciding what to automate, but terrible at helping you decide what to keep human. There’s no “human role designer” that lets you declare
“These 20% of steps are where I want to exercise creativity or judgment.”
“This decision should always involve a human, even if the AI could handle it.”
“This part of the process is where I want to learn, so don’t automate it.”
Instead, humans are relegated to two roles “prompt source” and “final approver.” That’s not collaboration it’s servitude.
2. Goal- and Value-Centric Configuration
You can configure tasks, flows, and agents in tools like n8n, CrewAI, or Codex, but you can’t configure human values.
There’s no way to say.
“Optimize for exploration over speed in this project.”
“Reserve architecture decisions for humans, even if the agent could decide.”
“Don’t propose patterns beyond X complexity so the team can design them.”
Without these knobs, AI tools default to efficiency often at the expense of learning, creativity, and human satisfaction.
3. The Narrative of Accomplishment
Tools like Cursor and Codex emphasize speed and quality, but they don’t help you answer a critical question “What did I actually contribute?”
After a session, there’s no “human contribution map” that shows,
“You designed these abstractions.”
“You chose this trade-off.”
“You overrode the agent here and refactored this core logic.”
That narrative is essential to a felt sense of mastery. Without it, we risk feeling like passive bystanders in our own work.
4. Human Control and Oversight Gaps
Even when tools include “human in the loop” features, it’s often a binary, late-stage gate
“Approve or reject this fully baked solution.”
“Here’s 95% of the work rubber-stamp it.”
That’s not oversight it’s a rubber stamp. What we need are ongoing stewardship tools that let humans

Understand why the AI made certain decisions (e.g., a “design rationale view”).
Gradually increase autonomy as trust and skill grow.
5. Creativity and Learning Gaps
AI tools are designed to reduce toil and cognitive load but they often remove the desirable difficulty that fuels creativity and skill development.
There’s no,
“Practice mode” where the AI acts as a coach, asking “What would you try?” before proposing its own solution.
“Scaffold-only mode” that generates alternatives for debate, rather than a single “optimal” answer.
Explicit learning objectives like “Are you trying to ship or trying to learn?”
Without these features, AI tools risk turning us into passive recipients of intelligence, rather than active shapers of it.
The Case for Desirable Difficulty
Why Struggle Is Essential
In 2011, researchers at the University of Chicago published a study on “desirable difficulty” the idea that challenges that make learning feel harder in the moment often lead to better long-term retention and mastery.
This isn’t just true for students it’s true for all of us.
When AI tools remove struggle, they also remove
Creativity The best ideas often emerge when we’re forced to improvise within constraints.
Confidence There’s no substitute for the feeling of “I figured this out.”
Resilience Struggle teaches us how to adapt, recover, and grow.
The Need for “Practice Modes”

Most AI tools measure success in binary terms “Task completed” or “Workflow ran without errors.” But what if they also measured
“Understanding increased” (e.g., via quizzes or explanations).
“Confidence improved” (e.g., via self-assessments).
“Team alignment strengthened” (e.g., via collaborative reviews).
These metrics would allow tools to optimize for human outcomes, not just efficiency. They’d help us grow, not just ship.

What Would Better Look Like?
If we want AI tools that preserve human agency, here’s what we need to build
1. A First-Class “Human Role Designer”
Every AI tool should include a layer where you can define
Roles “Architect,” “Editor,” “Critic,” “Storyteller.”
Skills to Exercise “I want to practice designing abstractions.”
Decisions Reserved for Humans “Always involve me in trade-offs between speed and reliability.”
This would ensure that humans aren’t just “prompt sources” but active participants in the creative process.
2. Modes for Creative Constraint and Practice
Tools should offer explicit modes that prioritize learning and creativity
Coach Mode The AI guides but doesn’t execute.
Scaffold Mode The AI provides a framework, but leaves the critical work to you.
Alternatives Mode The AI generates options, but you decide.
These modes would make AI a partner in growth, not just a shortcut.
3. Richer Oversight UX
We need tools that provide
Decision Timelines A visual map of what the AI did and why.
Rationale Views Explanations of trade-offs in human-friendly terms.
Intervention Points Opportunities to steer the AI early and often.
This would turn oversight from a binary gate into an ongoing collaboration.

After a session, tools should generate a “human contribution map” that shows

Where you overrode the AI and why.
This would preserve the narrative of accomplishment that’s so critical to motivation.
